Enjoy a musical jam
Enjoy an evening of old-time music with fiddle, guitar, banjo and more with the Washington Old Time Fiddlers, 5 p.m. Friday, and every second and fourth Friday, at the Sisco Heights Community Club, 13527 99th Ave. NE, Arlington. There’s a Celtic jam at 5 p.m., workshop at 6 and circle jam at 7. Musicians are welcome, or just come and enjoy the music.

Gates Foundation headlines event
United Way of Snohomish County holds a CORE Perspectives breakfast event, 6:30 to 9 a.m. Sept. 20 at the Tulalip Resort Casino, 10200 Quil Ceda Blvd., Tulalip. Tickets are $25. This is not a fundraiser.
Connie Collingsworth, chief business operations officer at the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, will talk about the foundation’s approaches to philanthropy and what it means to be innovative. A panel discussion follows about United Way’s work on its Creating Open Roads to Equity (CORE) effort.

Learn to fix your stuff
Have things like a broken lamp or a vacuum with a broken belt? Bring them to the Repair Cafe, set for 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sept. 22 at WSU Snohomish County Extension’s Education Center, 600 128th St. SE, Everett. Local repair specialists will offer free advice. The event is hosted by Washington State University Snohomish County Extension’s Sustainable Community Stewards. Registration is recommended. Walk-ins are welcome.

Get tips for net safety
The Everett Public Library offers a free “Staying Safe on the Internet” class, noon to 1:30 p.m. Sept. 20 at the main branch, 2702 Hoyt Ave. Learn how to create effective passwords, manage accounts safely and spot possible scams, among other topics. Registration is required.

Advice on parenting teens
Two workshops on parenting teens will be held this month at the Mariner Library, 520 128th St. SW, Everett.
“Understanding and Preventing Substance Abuse in Teens,” 5:30 p.m. Sept. 18, explores what makes teens particularly vulnerable to seeking drugs to cope with adolescence.
“Parent’s Guide to Teen Depression,” 5:30 p.m. Sept. 25, helps parents distinguish whether a teen is suffering from a clinical disorder and how to find treatment.

WAYS TO HELP
Make strides for ChildStrive
Strides for ChildStrive, a 5k fun run and walk to benefit ChildStrive, is set for 9:30 a.m. Sept. 22 at Legion Memorial Park, 145 Alverson Blvd., Everett. There also will be carnival games and lunch. Donations and participants welcome. The run is free, with prizes for fundraising. Volunteers also are welcome.
