Help name Everett’s newest school

EVERETT — The Everett School District is looking for help in naming its newest elementary.

Have a suggestion? Pitch it through an online survey, which will remain open through Oct. 28.

It’s a chance to introduce fresh ideas, said Gerard Holzman, planning principal for the new school. A committee of staff and parents will review, narrow down and then present a list of names to the school board for a final vote in December.

The elementary is under construction at 4419 180th St. SE, between Bothell and Mill Creek.

About 550 students, including children from nearby Forest View, Woodside and Cedar Wood schools, will attend the elementary. It is set to open by fall of 2019.

In the past, names have followed three themes: American presidents (Monroe, Jefferson, Madison), 19th century American writers (Hawthorne, Emerson, Longfellow) and natural aspects of the area.

Holzman said the committee could follow that tradition, or it could choose a different direction. Survey respondents might sway the decision.

This won’t be a popularity contest, Holzman warned. He said the committee will exercise discretion when picking a list of names to present to the board.

But, he added, the process could provide a chance to learn new things about the area and its history. “That’s what makes it exciting,” Holzman said.
