EDMONDS — A Mount Vernon man had a history of DUIs before a hit- and-run crush that left a woman with head injuries Monday night, according to a police report.

The man, 36, had been drinking at a video game arcade just a block away shortly before the collision, court papers show. His roommate said the suspect had apparently gotten so drunk that the bartender told him not to drive home.

He was driving a van that he bought earlier the same day. It didn’t have the ignition interlock device that was required from his previous offenses.

The driver was fiddling with the radio before he looked up and saw a car stopped in front of him in the 23600 block of Highway 99, he told police. He slammed on the brakes, he said, but it was too late.

The collision left a 41-year-old woman with injuries. She was taken to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle and released later in the evening. She received three stitches in her left eyebrow. Both of her eyes were swollen and bruised.

The man allegedly ran away. His roommate later told police that the man arrived home without his van.

Edmonds police said he had three DUI convictions on file, with at least two active cases in the past five years.

The man was arrested Wednesday and booked into the Snohomish County Jail for investigation of felony hit-and-run, vehicular assault, and other driving offenses. His bail was set at $100,000.
