That cabinet by the lake holds loaner life jackets in all sizes

This week, we have the scoop on safer swimming, bicycles that fit and volleyball for a good cause.

1. Borrow a life jacket.

It’s almost time to make the water your second home.

Just be sure to wear a life jacket when you do.

Don’t have one? Life jacket loaner cabinets are now installed at several lakes in Snohomish County parks, including at Martha Lake near Lynnwood and Silver Lake in Everett. Kids and adult sizes can be borrowed for free.

The cabinets, part of a Safe Kids Snohomish County initiative, will be open through Labor Day.

Safe Kids Snohomish County aims to prevent drowning by making life jackets readily available. According to Seattle Children’s Hospital, about 25 children die each year in Washington from drowning.

Life jacket cabinet locations can be found at www.parks.state.wa.us/956/Life-Jacket-Loaner-Program.

2. Swap a bike.

An event in Everett lets kids trade in a bike they have outgrown for one that fits them.

Kids can donate their old bicycle and receive credit for its value at the Kids Bike Swap from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. June 9 in the parking lot at 2531 Broadway. The event is hosted by Sharing Wheels Community Bike Shop. A parent or guardian must be present.

Value of the bike is based on its size and condition. Credit goes toward the purchase of a bigger bicycle.

A free helmet comes with every bike.

3. Rally for students.

You may get demolished by a spike, but at least it’s for a good cause.

Volley for Tomorrow, a fundraising event for Mukilteo’s Leadership Launch, is 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. June 8 at Cedar Valley Community School, 19200 56th Ave. W., Lynnwood.

Players of all skill levels can sign up to play volleyball. Register a team for $100, or sign up as a “free agent” for $25. Proceeds go to Leadership Launch, a nonprofit that supports first-generation college-bound students facing financial hardships.
