MOUNT VERNON — A woman has died while in custody in a Mount Vernon jail.
The Skagit Valley Herald reported Thursday that the 50-year-old woman complained of chest pain and difficulty breathing Wednesday at the Skagit County Community Justice Center.
Authorities say the woman, who was not named, collapsed while she was being transferred to the medical unit of the jail.
Officials say deputies performed CPR and medical personnel arrived to assist, but the woman could not be revived.
The Mount Vernon Police Department is investigating.
A police official says interviews with staff and about 30 incarcerated women revealed the woman had several medical conditions and was being treated with medications.
The Skagit County Coroner’s Office will determine the cause of death.
