GREENBANK — An Edmonds man died two weeks after a crash on Whidbey Island, according to the Washington State Patrol.

Gary Hughes, 71, was a passenger in a Hyundai Santa Fe headed east on Smugglers Cove Road around 7 p.m. Aug. 17.

The Hyundai driver turned left onto Highway 525, colliding head-on with a southbound Jeep Wrangler driven by a Freeland woman.

Both vehicles were totaled.

Hughes was taken to Harborview Medical Center. He died at 10:20 p.m. Sunday, according to the King County Medical Examiner’s Office.

The Freeland woman, 44, suffered injuries that sent her to Harborview, too, according to the state patrol.

The Hyundai driver, Hughes’ wife, 65, was also injured.

Troopers noted it appeared she failed to yield to the oncoming car, but that the crash remained under investigation.
