PREP STARS OF THE NIGHT FOR FRIDAY, DEC. 20:
Nakia Boston, Lynnwood girls basketball
Boston, a senior, scored 27 of the Royals’ 45 points (60%) in a 48-45 Wesco 3A/2A loss to Everett.
Danaysia Cain, Mariner girls basketball
Cain, a freshman, scored a game-high 12 points to lift the Marauders to a 34-25 Wesco 4A win over Cascade. It was the first win of the season for Mariner.
Baylor Denkinger, Edmonds-Woodway boys wrestling
Denkinger, a junior, went 5-0 at 120 pounds in the Warriors’ five victories in pool action at the Northwest Duals in Albany, Oregon. Denkinger’s 6-1 decision over Owen Hess of Dallas (Ore.) in the final pool match of the day helped the Warriors seal a 31-26 win and send them to Saturday’s championship bracket.
Aksel Espeland, Darrington boys wrestling
Espeland, a freshman, won his first two matches in the 98-pound weight class at the prestigious Tri-State tournament at North Idaho College, and advanced to Saturday’s semifinal round. Espeland, who weighed in at 97.4 pounds Friday, according to Loggers’ coach Ray Franke, has been wrestling at 106 pounds for in-state competition. Washington does not have a 98-pound weight class.
Kyle Hampton, Snohomish boys basketball
Hampton, a junior, scored 22 of the Panthers’ 41 points (54%) in a 71-41 Wesco 3A/2A loss to Mountlake Terrace
Sela Ho, Everett girls wrestling
Ho, a sophomore, pinned both of her opponents at 130 pounds during the Pride of the Lady Lions Invitational at Lynden High School, reaching Saturday’s quarterfinal round and helping the Seagulls to a third-place finish in the team standings after Day 1, tops among local teams.
Malakhi Knight, Marysville Getchell boys basketball
Knight, a junior, became the first Chargers player to reach 1,000 career points in a 72-62 Wesco 3A/2A win over Cedarcrest. Knight scored 34 points, grabbed 10 rebounds and added six assists, four steals and two blocks in the victory over the Red Wolves.
Kiana Lino, Shorecrest girls basketball
Lino, a junior, scored 15 points and grabbed 19 rebounds to help the Scots to a 58-43 Wesco 3A/2A win over Arlington.
Cort Roberson, Stanwood boys basketball
Roberson, a junior, scored 29 points in the Spartans’ 63-40 Wesco 3A/2A victory over Archbishop Murphy.
Grace Trichler, Sultan girls basketball
Trichler, a sophomore, scored 18 points to lift the Turks to a 42-19 non-conference win over Vashon Island.
