Former Silvertip Mitch Love moves up hockey coaching hierarchy

CALGARY, Alberta — Mitch Love’s coaching star continues to rise.

The former Everett Silvertips legend has moved up in the hockey-coaching hierarchy as the NHL’s Calgary Flames announced Monday they hired Love as the head coach of their AHL affiliate, the Stockton Heat.

The 37-year-old Love, who gained cult status as a pugilistic defenseman for Everett’s first two teams from 2003-05, began his coaching career as a Silvertips assistant in 2011. He spent seven seasons as an Everett assistant before being hired as head coach of the WHL’s Saskatoon Blades in 2018. Love spent three seasons in Saskatoon, guiding the Blades to a 95-44-12-4 record.

Love has also been involved as an assistant coach with Hockey Canada, serving in various roles with Canada’s U-17, U-18 and U-20 programs since 2015. He helped Canada win the gold medal at the 2020 World Junior Hockey Championships.

Love replaces Cail MacLean, who was promoted to assistant coach with the Flames.
