The Athlete of the Week nominees for Nov. 8-14. Voting closes at midnight Sunday. The winner will be announced with next week’s poll and in next Tuesday’s paper. Each weekly winner will be included in an Athlete of the Month poll.

Leah Wierschke | Jackson | Girls swim & dive

Wierschke, a senior, won the diving competition at the Class 4A District 1 championship meet on Nov. 6. She finished with an 11-dive score of 391.8 points to beat out two other state qualifiers. She won The Herald’s Athlete of the Week voting for Nov. 1-7 by claiming 893 (31.7%) of 2,816 votes.

This week’s nominees

Dylan Carson | Marysville Pilchuck | Football

Carson, a senior, churned out 281 yards and three touchdowns on 20 carries in the Tomahawks’ 52-21 win over Garfield in the first round of the Class 3A state tournament. He now has 2,138 yards and 41 touchdowns on the ground this season.

Mary Clarke | Snohomish | Girls swim and dive

Clarke, a sophomore, won the Class 3A state title in the 50-yard freestyle and finished second in the 100 freestyle during the high school girls swim and dive championships at King County Aquatics Center. She finished the 50 freestyle in 23.51 seconds and the 100 freestyle in 51.19.

Trayce Hanks | Lake Stevens | Football

Hanks, a senior, totaled 249 yards from scrimmage and two touchdowns on just 10 touches as the Vikings beat Richland 52-7 in the first round of the Class 4A state tournament. He finished with 130 yards and one TD on seven carries and 119 yards and one TD on three receptions.

Trey Leckner | Glacier Peak | Football

Leckner, a junior, ran for 232 yards and four touchdowns on 21 carries and added three receptions for 36 yards in the Grizzlies’ 49-35 loss to Bothell in the first round of the Class 4A state tournament.

Ellina Powell | Jackson | Volleyball

Powell, a senior, had 23 assists, 21 digs and 14 kills and she helped the Timberwolves secure a 25-14, 11-25, 26-25, 25-16 victory over Issaquah in the Class 4A Wes-King Bi-District Tournament. The win clinched a state tournament berth for Jackson.

Sara Rodgers | Snohomish | Girls soccer

Rodgers, a junior, scored the clinching goal during penalty kicks and gave the Panthers their lone goal in regulation as Snohomish won its first-round Class 3A state tournament game against Roosevelt 1-1 (5-4 PKs).

Claire Smith | Kamiak | Girls swim and dive

Smith, a sophomore, claimed the Class 4A state title in the 100-yard butterfly during the high school girls swim and dive championships at King County Aquatics Center. She finished the race with a winning time of 57.10 seconds.
