What: Acer tegmentosum “Joe Witt,” a Manchurian snakebark maple, boasts beautiful highly striped white bark that brightens the shade garden and, together with its vase-like shape, creates a ghostly frame against a backdrop of evergreens.

Where: The foliage color and green and white stems are best and brightest in open to dappled shade. Keep the main trunk protected from full sun to prevent splitting and damage during the winter. Provide a location with well-drained soil and occasional watering during summer dry spells.

Size: Grows to 20 feet tall by 15 feet wide inn 10 years.

Care: Needs occasional watering. The upright vase shape requires very little pruning to maintain — you only need to remove broken or dead branches.
