3 local spring sports teams claim academic state championships

Three local high school spring sports teams were announced as academic state champions Monday by the Washington Interscholastic Activities Association.

The Glacier Peak girls track and field team claimed the Class 4A academic state title in its sport, posting a 3.84 team grade-point average among the 27 athletes on its team.

The Shorewood girls track and field team won the 3A academic state crown in its sport, with a 3.87 team GPA among its 51 athletes.

And the Kamiak boys soccer team took the 4A academic state title in its sport, with a 3.68 team GPA among its 14 players. The Knights also advanced to the 4A state tournament, where they are the No. 15 seed and will travel to face No. 2 seed Union in a first-round match Wednesday night.

The WIAA awards academic state championships in each sport and activity to the team with the highest GPA in its classification.
