Why does campaign rhetoric put emphasis on ‘fighting’?

It’s election time again, and from all sides we were barraged by people who ask for our votes because each and every one of them vows that they “will fight for …” whatever. Why do they have to fight? Fighting implies that they know what is best and they are not going to listen to anyone else’s viewpoint.

To me, that sounds very egotistical and quite the opposite of what I would hope for from an elected official representing me. Whatever happened to discussing the situation to reach common ground?

The author Isaac Asimov put it very succinctly: “Violence is the last refuge of the incompetent.”
