Why won’t Congress fix Social Security’s solvency?

The Herald’s editorial about the impending depletion of Social Security funds was well-written, necessary and maddening (“Drain on Social Security’s solvency isn’t easing,” The Herald, Nov. 17). Maddening because this message has been out there for years and years and years. How many articles, mailings, petitions, etc., have we all read or received on this topic? And precisely what has happened so far?

An increase to the payroll taxable income threshold is always presented as part of the solution. Well, duh, of course it is; or at least it would be if it ever happened!

Just do it! Constant nattering about a solvable problem followed by taking no action is beyond exasperating. It’s gaslighting!

Not that this is the only thing driving me around the bend. The biannual month-long debates over the pros and cons of making daylight saving time permanent come in a close second. Either switch it or deal with it. Oh, and have I mentioned the folly of even trying to recycle plastics?
