How is ‘affordable housing’ defined? What’s the cost?

I hear in the news media just about everyday, that affordable housing is being built. Can someone tell me and the other readers, just what does affordable housing mean? Is there a dollar figure associated with affordable housing? Would The Herald be willing to answer this question in an upcoming news story?

Editor’s note: The federal Department of Housing and Urban Development defines “affordable housing” as a dwelling that a family or household can rent or purchase that requires payments of no more than 30 percent of that household’s income. This is the figure typically cited by advocates of affordable housing.
