EDMONDS — An off-duty Seattle police officer shot at an alleged car thief Monday morning, police said.

Around 5:30 a.m., the off-duty officer discovered people breaking into his Hyundai Santa Fe in the 9500 block of Edmonds Way, according to the Edmonds Police Department.

The Seattle officer reported the suspects drove his car toward him, struck him and knocked him to the ground.

The officer fired one round at the car as they drove away, according to Edmonds police. The gunshot reportedly hit a fence nearby.

Police are investigating whether the officer used a personal or duty weapon, according to the department.

King County sheriff’s deputies found the officer’s car in Burien. It was abandoned, and police didn’t make any arrests.

The off-duty officer suffered “bumps and bruises,” police said. He was being treated at a local hospital.
