Herald’s story quota for reporters misses demands of journalism

The Herald’s policy of tying reporters’ wages to a story count is absolute insanity. Do the owners have any idea how a democracy works and why citizens want and need newspapers? If you have never sat through a four-hour city council or school board meeting, then turned out a story on deadline, you have no idea how hard and important a job it is.
The next time the city or county builds a four=lane highway past your house and you didn’t know about it because no reporter was covering the news beat because there is no newspaper, look at yourself as the reason for this unpleasant surprise.
