What can high schools do about blow-out scores?

While reading the Herald’s sports prep roundup the other day I was chagrined to read of the continuing mismatches in high school basketball, particularly on the girls side.
In one evening of games, there were scores of 57-8, 59-11, 65-13, 65-24, 74-33 and 73-38. I can’t believe that those games benefited either team. It makes me wonder if there could be a way to change how leagues are formed to allow teams of more equal abilities to compete against one another. I wish I had an answer but I don’t.
However, I would encourage sportswriter Aaron Coe to write a column interviewing coaches on both sides of these scores as well as athletic directors to see how they feel about these games and if they have any ideas or solutions regarding these inequities.
High school sports, like all cocurricular activities, are wonderful opportunities for students. I wonder if it is possible to make them even better experiences.
