EVERETT — One man died after officers shot him following reports of gunfire early Friday morning in Everett.

Around 2:30 a.m. Friday, an Everett officer, who happened to be near Emerson Elementary School, responded to reports of gunfire in the 8700 block of 7th Avenue Southeast, said Snohomish County Multiple Agency Response Team spokesperson Mandy Kruger in an email.

Officers, with assistance from Snohomish County Sheriff’s Office deputies and a drone unit, located a lone adult male who reportedly discharged a handgun into the air, Kruger said. Following attempts to negotiate and de-escalate, the man advanced towards the officers, she said.

Officers deployed multiple tasers, but when the man continued to approach, officers discharged their firearms, Kruger said.

First responders transported the man to the hospital, where he later died due to his injuries, Kruger said. No officers were injured.

7th Avenue Southeast from 84th Street Southeast to 88th Street Southeast was closed most of the day.

Officials have been in communication with the Everett School District about the incident “so that they can coordinate closures and delays at their discretion,” Kruger said.

Emerson Elementary School is closed Friday due to the investigation, according to the school’s website. Nearby St. Mary Magdalen Catholic School is also closed, according to its Facebook page.

Snohomish County Multiple Agency Response Team is investigating this incident. The task force of detectives, known as SMART, is assigned to look into police use of force.
