Polestar 4 has finally made safe passage to America.
What is it, you ask? It delivers electric-age innovation. SUV spaciousness. And coupe-like aerodynamics. Polestar 4 is a high-performance, luxury, all-electric, crossover vehicle designed in Sweden with help from Volvo, and now manufactured in South Korea.
Previously the vehicle was made in China and faced 100 per cent tariffs, making sales in the US impossible. The model has been around for four years, but for the previously mentioned reason, is now making its debut.
Polestar 4 is powered by a dual-motor with battery pack configuration that includes all-wheel drive. The combination generates a robust 544 horsepower, 506 lb-ft of torque, and 0-to-60 miles-per-hour time of 3.5 seconds. On a full charge, it provides a range close to 300 miles. It seats up to five adults and includes a generous trunk wide enough to fit two full-size golf bags lengthwise.
What sets Polestar 4 apart from any car I’ve ever driven is the fact it lacks a rearview window. A high-definition screen that shows a real-time feed from a roof-mounted rear camera shows a far wider field of view than what can be experienced in most modern vehicles.
Thanks to the elimination of the rear window, the fixed panoramic glass roof stretches beyond the rear occupants’ heads, creating a truly unique interior ambience. A secondary media and climate control screen is mounted between the front seats to enable rear occupant control.
Polestar previews a stunning new occupant experience by removing the rear window and pushing the rear header, which plays an integral safety role, further back,” Maximillian Missoni, head of Polestar design said. “This means that now, rear occupants can have a unique experience in our SUV coupé.”
Enhancing that experience is a full-length glass roof with electrochroamatic functionality, allowing for opaque or transparent viewing, depending on mood or weather. Other unique features include the car unlocking and door handles appearing upon approach, the car turning on when the driver sits down, and the car turning off and locking when the driver exits. Only a key fob in your pocket or purse is required.
Driving dynamics are true to the Polestar brand – sharp steering and handling responses result in a thrilling and nimble driving experience for all occupants. One-pedal driving adds to the thrill. Take your foot off the pedal and Polestar quickly comes to a full stop. The steering wheel includes three modes that can be tailor made to your driving style.
With a Level2 garage charging station, Polestar 4 can be fully charge overnight from any range of battery depletion. Fast charging stations can do the trick in 30-40 minutes.
Exterior features are unique as well. Polestar jokingly claims it’s the kind of robotic, yet sexy design that can appeal to both humans and humanoids. The SUV features a low, sleek front with air curtains below the headlights, rear side aero blades, flush glazing door handles and 22-inch wheels all working in unison to minimize drag.
Creature comforts include Google Maps, heated and ventilated front seats, wireless phone charging, 15.4-inch landscaped-oriented touchscreen for all controls, Apple CarPlay, Spotify, air conditioning, and an optional Harman Kardon audio system with 12 speakers and 1,400-watt channel-hybrid amplifier.
Completing the Polestar4 is a robust, technology-driven safety suite highlighted by forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, blind-spot warning, cross-traffic alert, evasive steering assist, pilot assist, parking assist, and more.
