Snohomish: Cops take kids shopping

Snohomish police officers hosted their annual “Shop with a Cop” event last week at the Snohomish Station Fred Meyer.

Officers worked with local schools to find children who might need a hand getting presents for Christmas, Snohomish police Sgt. Cynthia Caterson said. They took the children shopping Thursday. Each child was given a gift card to spend on presents for themselves or others.

The presents were paid for by donations from police officers and Fred Meyer, Caterson said.

The officers look forward to the event every year, she said.

Applications are available on the city’s website at http://tinyurl.com/EverettBoards and must be sent to the Mayor’s Office/Boards and Commissions, Attention: Anne Pogson, 2930 Wetmore Ave. Suite 10A, Everett, WA 98201. Completed applications must be received by 5 p.m. Jan. 6.

Snohomish County: County increases fees to reclaim stray pets

The Snohomish County Council on Monday approved raising the fee for reclaiming cats and dogs from the animal shelter by $6 in 2012.

The cost for an impounded animal would be $278 from Everett’s shelter and $243 from the Progressive Animal Welfare Society in Lynnwood. People who fail to claim their animals could be billed as well.

The fee is intended to cover the county’s costs for apprehending, transporting, sheltering and feeding animals. The increase owes to higher labor and fuel costs.

The cost to redeem an animal brought to the shelter by someone other than staff would remain unchanged: $145 in Everett and $110 at PAWS.

Mountlake Terrace: Transportation district

The City Council voted 5-2 to form a Transportation Benefit District to help pay for the council’s top priority: the Main Street Revitalization Project which carries a $10.5 million price tag. The extra car-tab fees that come with the district would cover one-third of those costs.

Council members will serve on the board of the independent taxing district and establish an annual vehicle licensing fee of up to $20 per vehicle without voter approval. The state Department of Licensing could begin collecting the tax as early as July. TBD revenues are earmarked for funding transportation projects. Residents will stop being charged when the projects are complete.

TBD revenues are expected to cover $3.5 million of the downtown project’s costs. Utilities fees and grants are expected to cover the remaining $7 million.

The council was divided on the fee issue during a Dec. 5 public hearing.

The project would reconstruct the downtown area, specifically the stretch of 56th Avenue W from 230th Street SW to 236th Street SW. The project includes repaving, adding bicycle lanes, moving power lines underground, adding energy-efficient lighting and planting trees, among other improvements.
