Prep girls basketball: Meadowdale 60, Glacier Peak 57

SNOHOMISH — Margareet Barhoum scored five of her game-high 21 points in the final 25 seconds to lead Meadowdale past Glacier Peak, 60-57, in an important early season Wesco 3A girls basketball matchup Wednesday at the Glacier Peak gym.

Barhoum’s 3-pointer with just over 20 seconds remaining in the fourth quarter gave the Mavericks a one-point lead and, after Glacier Peak was unable to convert on either of their free throws on their ensuing possession, Barhoum converted on both of her’s to nail down the victory.

The game looked like it would be a rout early, as Meadowdale took advantage of its full-court defensive pressure to run out to a 21-3 first-quarter lead. That pressure defense would lead to 22 Grizzlies turnovers over the course of the entire contest.

The Grizzlies, though, were able to claw their way back into the game, closing to within six points at halftime.

They were then able to cut Meadowdale’s lead to one after outscoring the Mavericks 13-8 in the third quarter due in large part to the foul trouble that sidelined Barhoum, the Mavericks’ leading scorer.

That left Barhoum well rested as she entered the fourth quarter with her team in a precarious spot, holding a 43-42 lead. And those fresh legs became the difference as Meadowdale scored 17 points in the final quarter.

“We had a big win against Shorecrest last week and I don’t want to say we got big-headed,” Glacier Peak head coach Brian Hill stated, “but we got a little over confident perhaps. We just didn’t come out of the gates the way we needed to.”
