COUPEVILLE — In a back and forth Cascade Conference volleyball match, Lakewood’s Hayley Liebel proved to be the difference in her team’s 3-2 win over Coupeville Monday night.
Liebel had a game-high 20 kills for the Cougars (4-7 league, 4-7 overall) and gave Coupeville (5-6, 6-6) fits all night on the way to a 25-27, 25-19, 16-25, 25-19, 15-10 victory that spoiled Coupeville’s Senior Night.
“She was hitting the line tonight and tipping a lot,” Coupeville coach Toni Crebbin said. “She wasn’t consistent and we did not know where to go on her. It was pretty much all her.”
Liebel led the Cougar attack but Sam Adams put Liebel in position with 31 assists and 13 digs. Kaylee Diggs added five aces for Lakewood.
With two games remaining, the victory assures Lakewood can finish no worse than tied for fourth among the other Cascade Conference 2A teams. If they can outplay Granite Falls (4-7, 4-7), which lost to South Whidbey (8-3, 8-3) Monday night, the rest of the way, the Cougars can avoid a play-in game and head straight to the District 1 playoffs.
Coupeville has known its postseason fate for awhile and has two more games before advancing to play Nooksack Valley, but Crebbin believes they need to get more consistent as the regular season comes to a close.
“We’re playing for confidence right now,” Crebbin said.”That’s what we’re looking for.”
Jessica Riddle led the attack for Coupeville with 13 kills and Julie Swankie added a game-high 37 assists.
South Whidbey 3, Granite Falls 0: At Langley, Allison Wood had 12 kills and six aces, Kelsey Dorpat added seven aces, and South Whidbey (8-3 league and overall) rolled to a 25-18, 25-13, 25-17 Cascade Conference victory over Granite Falls (4-7 league and overall).
Archbishop Murphy 3, Cedarcrest 0: At Everett, Archbishop Murphy cruised to another Cascade Conference victory this time 25-15, 25-13, 25-16 over Cedarcrest. The Wildcats (10-1 league, 10-1 overall) who have already secured one of three conference bids to the 2A playoffs, had a balanced attack led by Hannah Kegley who tallied seven kills and two aces. Hannah Linsenmayer led the team with seven aces and 21 Digs. Dani Baehm chipped in four aces and 25 assists. Statistics for Cedarcrest (2-9, 2-9) were not reported.
King’s 3 Sultan 0: At Sultan, in a bit of a mismatch, the undefeated and first-place King’s Knights had no problem with winless Sultan. King’s won 25-13, 25-7, 25-15 and improved its record to 11-0 league and overall. Sultan (0-11, 0-11) has two more games left on the schedule to try and capture its first win of the season.
