Everett: School supply drive next week
Big yellow buses are expected to park outside three locations next week as the Everett Public Schools Foundation holds a supply drive.
Suggested donation items include backpacks, 24-count boxes of crayons and hand sanitizer for elementary students. Middle and high school students need items such as 4-gigabyte USB flash drives, pocket dictionaries and scientific calculators. Financial donations also will help buy supplies.
Collection buses will be in Everett at Staples, 4920 Evergreen Way, and Northwest Plus Credit Union, 2821 Hewitt Ave. A third bus will be at Central Market, 15605 Main Street, Mill Creek. Hours will be 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Aug 21 and 22, and 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Aug. 23 to 27.

Fire District 1 seeking fire commissioner
Snohomish County Fire District 1 seeks nominees for its Board of Fire Commissioners.
The board is responsible for the district’s long-term vision and for adopting administrative policies. Commissioner Brian McMahan plans to resign Sept. 30. He is moving outside of the district, making him ineligible to remain on the board.
Nominees must be registered voters who live in the district, which includes unincorporated areas south of Everett and north of Lynnwood and Edmonds.
Interested candidates should submit an application and a letter of interest by Aug. 31 to Marsha Moore, executive assistant to the board, at 12425 Meridian Ave. in Everett.

YMCA sponsors video contest
YMCA of Snohomish County is hosting a contest for amateur videographers. The theme of the video contest is “What’s Your Y Story?”
Submissions should show the effect the Y has had on your life and what your life would be like without it.
Videos must be between 30 seconds and three minutes long and can be submitted until midnight Aug. 31. Entries will be posted on the Y’s YouTube channel for judging. Y staff and volunteers will choose three finalists, and the public will vote on a winner. The winner will be announced Sept. 17.

Lynnwood: Grant helps restore park
The Hazel Miller Foundation has awarded $2,500 to the Lynnwood Parks and Recreation Foundation for restoration improvements at Gold Park, 6421 200th St. SW.
The garden, designed by Edmonds Community College’s Learn and Serve Environmental Anthropology Field School, will showcase native Northwest plants and their uses in past cultures.

Mukilteo: Hear from Mukilteo pioneer
Jo-An Chandler Cannon, 2010 Pioneer of the Year, will talk about her early memories of Mukilteo as the daughter of the town’s only doctor at the The Mukilteo Historical Society’s meeting at 7 p.m. Thursday in the Art Room of Rosehill Community Center, 304 Lincoln Ave.
Snohomish: Author shares writing secrets
Cricket McRae, author of several mysteries set in Snohomish, will share her experience getting published at 7 p.m. today at the Snohomish Library, 311 Maple Ave. A writing exercise will follow the discussion.
