Sons of Norway scholarship winners
Five local high school seniors recently received scholarships from the Sons of Norway, Normanna Lodge 3, of Everett.
The scholarship winners are seniors Zachary Coleman and Anthony Rose of Lake Stevens High School, Brittany McMahan of Cascade High School, Madison Taylor of Everett High School and Amelia Waggoner of North Sound Christian School in Mountlake Terrace.
Edmonds resident graduates from SPU
Meagan Newman graduated from Seattle Pacific University on June 13 with a bachelor of arts degree in political science. Her double major was international affairs and public policy and law.
She is a 2007 graduate of Edmonds Woodway High School, and the daughter of Mark Newman and Cindy Williamson of Woodway and Ann Newman and Kirk Jones of Edmonds.
Monroe resident honored at RIT
Jeremy Thorton, son of Christopher and Ann Thorton of Monroe, was recently named a 2009-2010 Outstanding Undergraduate Scholar at Rochester Institute of Technology in Rochester, N.Y.
A graduate of Monroe High School, Thorton is pursuing a bachelor’s of science in computer engineering with a minor in Japanese language and culture.
He has been a student manager for the college’s food services and has completed work and study with Intel Corp., where he will be employed after graduation.
Lake Stevens High wins musical awards
Lake Stevens High School’s spring musical, “The Mikado,” recently earned awards for costume design and hair and makeup design from the 5th Avenue High School Musical Awards Show.
The Tony Awards-style show recognizes the work, talent and commitment that faculty and students put into their productions.
North Sound Christian student awarded $100
Senior Victoria Speck of North Sound Christian High School in Mountlake Terrace was awarded $100 as the Davis Law Group Scholar Athlete of the Week.
Speck has a 4.0 grade-point average.
As co-captain, she led her high school volleyball team to the state tournament for the past three years, and placed eighth this year. She also played basketball for the past four years; the team advanced to state each year. This spring, she joined the track and field team. She plans to study physical therapy.
Sultan High grad wins WSU scholarship
Washington State University sophomore Jeff Van Wyngarden recently received a $2,000 academic achievement scholarship from the College of Human and Natural Resource Sciences.
He is also the recipient of the Mortar Board Outstanding Freshman Scholar Award and was recently named to the President’s Honor Roll.
Van Wyngarden is a graduate of Sultan High School. He is the son of Russ and Diane Van Wyngarden of Monroe and the grandson of Angie Van Wyngarden of Everett.
St. Mary Magdalen students perform
Students at St. Mary Magdalen School in Everett recently sang songs as fifth-grade narrators presented the culture, geography and musical history of various areas of the world.
The spring program of singing, dancing, musical performances, and pictures from around the world was presented June 8 to parents and the school.
The program was orchestrated and directed by music and drama teacher Maureen McMurray. The fifth-grade narrators were Mariah Agyapong, Emily Cooper, Austin Desroche, Joseph Doyle, Will Lewis, Amanda Mai, Lucy Murnan, Patrick Norman, Noelle Phillips, Kailee Spoul and Shota Takei.
Snohomish student in Coast Guard program
Megan Rice, a junior at Snohomish High School, was selected for the U.S. Coast Guard Academy Introduction Mission Summer Program.
The one-week program gives students the chance to see if the academy is right for them, and if they have what it takes to succeed. Rice will participate in the program July 3 to 10 in New London, Conn.
She is the daughter of Bruce and Melanie Rice of Snohomish.
Comcast awards local student sholarships
The Comcast Foundation recently awarded $1,000 scholarships to 87 students in Washington through the annual Leaders and Achievers Scholarship Program.
