Former Jackson High wrestler to compete for Yakima Valley CC women

Christina Ordonez isn’t the only local female wrestler who plans to grapple after high school.

Nelly Aramburo, who wrestled for Jackson High School this past winter, verbally committed to compete for the Yakima Valley Community College women’s wrestling team. In her first season in the sport, Aramburo qualified for the girls state championships in Tacoma. She went 0-2 in the 285-pound division.

Aramburo will join a second-year Yakima Valley CC squad that won a national championship in its inaugural season.

“I think it will be great for her, both in terms of academics and as an athlete,” Jackson High wrestling coach Gustavo Anaya said.

Another one-time Jackson High wrestler, Tara Miller, wrestled last year for the Pacific University (Forest Grove, Ore.) women’s team. Miller competed for Pacific at 130 pounds but left the team around Christmas to pursue other interests, Pacific head wrestling coach Severin Walsh said.

Miller was a state runnerup for Jackson at 103 pounds in the 2007 Washington high school girls state championships.
