Super Kid: Anne Yoon, 18, Edmonds-Woodway High School senior

Published 9:04 pm Sunday, January 10, 2010

Homework help: As president of the Edmonds-Woodway High School National Honor Society, Anne Yoon organized a peer tutoring club on campus. Three days a week, students can skip their advisory period to tutor or receive help from Honor Society students.

Anne (pronounced Annie) tutors in math. She believes students are more likely to seek help during the school day than after school. Also, some students who are hesitant to ask teachers for help attend the tutoring sessions because they feel more comfortable with their peers, Anne said.

Geography whiz: Geography and American history are Anne’s specialties in Hi-Q, an academic bowl competition. She joined the Edmonds-Woodway squad last year and experienced a little stage fright during the first few competitions. She wasn’t sure when to press the button to answer a question.

It’s grown on her. “It’s a challenge for sure, and I think I like that challenge. It’s weird, but when you get a question right, it’s satisfying.”

Tee time: Anne golfs for the Warriors. Her favorite course is the Mill Creek Country Club. “All the greens are nice, and they are challenging but not too hard.”

Read it: “The Golden Compass,” a fantasy novel by Philip Pullman, is her favorite book. She loves the book’s adventure and fantasy, but was disappointed in the movie that came out in 2007.

Little sis: Anne is the youngest of four children. She has two sisters and a brother. “My sisters treat me well. We get along a lot. As big sisters, they definitely take on that role. They are my big sisters. They take care of me, see that I’m OK, buy me things and give me rides.”

California dreaming: Anne hopes to attend Pitzer College in Claremont, Calif., next fall. She’s not sure what she wants to study, but is drawn to the school’s emphasis on social justice, intercultural understanding and environmental sensitivity.

Busting myths: Every Wednesday at 9 p.m., Anne sits in front of the television and watches her favorite show, “MythBusters,” a Discovery Channel show featuring hosts who try to scientifically test myths.

Anne even has a “MythBusters” T-shirt. “I really love MythBusters. It’s so cool. I just love the people on the show. They are so funny and they make science so cool. Just how they build things and test myths is so cool.”
