PREP TENNIS ROUNDUP: Stanwood holds onto first place

EVERETT — After a loss to Arlington last Friday night, the start of the second half of the Stanwood girls tennis season was a return to form, as the Spartans edged the Everett Seagulls 4-3 on Thursday afternoon.

With the win, Stanwood remains atop the division with an 8-1 record, thanks in large part to some key changes.

Sophomore standout Megan LaLone won her match at No. 1 singles, but the other three Stanwood points were a bit more unconventional.

“We switched up the lineup somewhat today and it worked,” said Stanwood head coach Trudy Abrams.

Regular doubles player Kallen Shaughnessy moved back to singles and won at No. 3 in three sets and her freshman sister Elle teamed with sophomore Heather Smith to win at No. 3 doubles.

But the key match proved to be at No. 2 doubles, which featured the rarely-used seniors tandem of Reane Lee/Shelby Irish, who won in straight sets.

“We always have fun when we play Everett,” said Abrams. “It’s usually a competitive match and Tim (Boyd, Everett coach) and his team always make sure it’s a fun rivalry.”
