PREP GIRLS BASKETBALL ROUNDUP: Monroe wins with 3rd-quarter outburst

MONROE — The Monroe girls basketball team relied on its defensive quickness and a 22-point third quarter to distance itself from Shorewood, winning 49-31 in a first-round game of the 4A District 1 playoffs Tuesday night.
The Wesco North’s No. 1 seed, Monroe plays Lake Stevens at 6 p.m. Friday in a winner-to-state semifinal game at Marysville-Pilchuck High School. Shorewood plays Jackson in a loser-out game at 6 p.m. Thursday at M-P.
After taking a 20-15 lead at halftime, Monroe went off, scoring 22 points in the third quarter while holding Shorewood to seven.
“Really the telling stat was a team stat, the 29 steals we had and with only seven turnovers,” Monroe assistant head coach Craig Bekins said.
Suzanna Ohlsen (game-high 25 points) had six steals and Sara Murphy had eight steals.
“That really was the game,” Bekins said.
“Both teams had first-playoff-game-in-districts-tightness, but for some wonderful reason we relaxed in the third quarter,” Bekins said.
Bekins said that although Monroe swept Lake Stevens during the regular season, the district semi will be a whole different beast.
“Every game is new and we take nothing for granted,” Bekins added. “We feel very fortunate to get by them the first two games of the season. Its a whole new season now. We hope that we are able to do the right things and play hard enough and have a shot at it.”
