SULTAN — Kathleen Kohler’s writing isn’t for the birds — it’s about them.

The author will be included in “The Ultimate Bird Lover,” scheduled for release on Feb. 1.

The book, part of a series from the publisher of “Chicken Soup for the Soul,” will be the first to anthologize Kohler’s writing.

“They e-mailed me just before Thanksgiving and said they’d accepted it,” said Kohler, 48, of Sultan. “That was very exciting.”

Kohler’s humorous story is about two purple finches that appeared to have a marital spat in her back yard.

“She went to one side of the feeder, he went to the other,” she said. “They turned their backs to each other.”

Kohler quit her job as a bookstore manager two years ago to become a writer, a dream of hers since first grade. Since then she’s had several stories published in small magazines.

She will sign copies of the “The Ultimate Bird Lover” on Feb. 20 in Monroe and also will celebrate with her writers group.

“I plan to take a cake to the meeting,” she said.
