Tips up for three awards

Published 5:56 pm Tuesday, April 27, 2010

All of my posts so far this week have concerned Thursday’s bantam draft. However, let’s not forget the WHL holds its annual awards luncheon Wednesday afternoon. Everett has three candidates for awards.

Only one involves the team’s performance this season. Head coach Craig Hartsburg is up for the Coach of the Year award. It’d be quite the accomplishment for Hartsburg to earn the award, given this was his first year in the WHL in any capacity. But the 34-point turnaround the Tips experienced under Hartsburg’s tutelage is hard to ignore. He’s up against Kootenay’s Mark Holick, and I’ve got to think Hartsburg has a good chance of winning. If he does he’ll become the second Coach of the Year winner in franchise history. Kevin Constantine was bestowed the honor following Everett’s magical expansion season in 2003-04.

The others up for awards are captain Zack Dailey and director of business operations Zoran Rajcic. Dailey was the Western Conference nominee for Humanitarian of the Year. He’s up against Kootenay’s Matt Fraser. Rajcic is up for the Marketing/Public Relations Award. He’ll go against Brandon’s Rick Dillabough.
