MONROE — The infant who was seriously injured in a May 18 house fire died Saturday.

The King County medical examiner said Nancy Y. Garcia-Diaz died as a result of burns that covered 30 percent of her body. The child was 1 month and 11 days old. Her death was ruled an accident.

The girl’s mother reportedly rescued the girl from the blaze in the 17100 block of Tester Road, officials said.

Investigators determined an overloaded power strip sparked the fire that caused about $120,000 damage, deputy fire marshal Mike Makela said.

The baby was rushed to Valley General Hospital and then taken to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle, where she died. Nancy was the first person to die in a blaze in unincorporated Snohomish County this year, Makela said.

Four children were among the people who died last year in fires. Two girls died in September in a mobile home blaze in Snohomish and two boys perished in a November house fire in Arlington.
