MONROE — A Sultan-area teenager died when his car apparently missed a turn on a rural road near Monroe and struck a tree.

A passerby spotted the 19-year-old’s car around 7 a.m. Thursday morning in the 11600 block of Woods Lake Road, Snohomish County sheriff’s spokeswoman Rebecca Hover said.

The 1993 Ford Probe was about 10 feet off the road, she said. The driver was dead at the scene.

Detectives believe the crash happened sometime early Thursday or late Wednesday.

The car was headed west and appeared to have missed a curve, striking the tree, Hover said.

Speed likely was a factor in the crash, Hover said.

The teenager’s identity was not immediately released. No one else was in the vehicle.

The young man attended Sultan High School two or three years ago, but did not graduate and was not a current student, principal Cal Johnson said.

The Snohomish County Medical Examiner was expected to conduct an autopsy.
