Wapato spoils Sultan’s 2A tourney opener

YAKIMA — Willie Blodgett scored 18 points, Matt Guevara added 17, and sixth-ranked Wapato pulled away from Sultan for a 56-39 first-round win Wednesday in the Class 2A boys state tournament.
Blodgett was just four of 15 shooting, but made nine of 12 free throws. Guevara made eight of 11 shots, including six of nine in the second half, to lead the Wolves (17-6).
Jordan Nicholes led the Turks (15-10) with 18 points and 12 rebounds, but Sultan suffered from cold shooting. The Turks shot just 25 percent, and made just six of 26 shots in the second half.
The Wolves’ defense came away with 11 steals and helped pressure Sultan into 20 turnovers. Wapato turned those miscues into 21 points.
