City Council postpones worker layoff decision
The City Council voted to postpone approving laying off two city employees and other cuts to the budget at its Tuesday meeting.
Sales tax revenues, which pay for nearly half the city’s general budget, continue to fall. That’s forced the city to consider cuts, including laying off a building inspector and a street maintenance worker as well as reducing or reassigning other positions. The city also would forgo a $40,000 city marketing plan. The proposed cuts would save the city about $23,000 a month.
The city already cut spending in its 2009 budget by about $600,000.
About 30 people showed up to the Tuesday night meeting to protest the cuts. Employee representatives said they were trying to find other ways to cut money so people wouldn’t lose their jobs. The affected employees have already been notified that they may lose their jobs if other city departments can’t scrape together savings.
The council will consider the issue again at its next meeting Feb. 17.
