Prep tennis: Jackson moves into first place

EDMONDS — It didn’t start well for Edmonds-Woodway but they still managed to make it interesting.

Mike Stepenski, Edmonds-Woodway’s No. 1 singles player, tweaked his ankle during warm-ups and had to retire, giving Jackson the early lead in the Wesco South tennis meet that it eventually went on to win 4-3 at Edmonds-Woodway High School.

Stepenski came down awkwardly on his ankle after hitting a shot and hobbled off the court. Edmonds-Woodway head coach Dan Crist said he is day-to-day.

As for the rest of the matches, they were much closer. A marathon match at No. 2 doubles saw the Warriors’ (8-2 league and overall) Eric Jones and Ian Southcote-Want defeat Kevin Law and Wesley Jacobsen 7-5, 6-7 (3-7), 7-5, in a game that lasted about two and a half hours.

Jackson (9-1) won the first three singles matches, and the team of David Kim and Chris Chung were able to pull out a win in No. 3 doubles to clinch the win for the Timberwolves.

“They’ve got a lot of good players up and down the line,” Crist said when asked about standout Jackson players. “They’re a real good team … it’s hard to pick anybody out.”

Crist was also quick to point out Jake Lagucik, the lone Edmonds-Woodway singles winner at number four, who won 7-6 (7-2), 6-4.

“They don’t get much closer than that,” Crist said.

Well, except for number two doubles.
