No comeback for Holmgren … at least not next year

RENTON — While Mike Holmgren has not ruled out the possibility of a future comeback, the Seattle Seahawks’ coach won’t be pulling any Brett Favres.

Holmgren told Bay Area reporters during a Wednesday conference call that he won’t be back next season. After that, the Seahawks’ head coach said, his future is still uncertain.

When answering a question about whether he could come back and coach one day, Holmgren said: “I’m going to take some time off. I’m going to take some time off and I made that promise to my family. I’m looking at it as kind of a sabbatical leave. I’m going to take some time off and see how I feel.”

Holmgren was obviously being asked the questions because of two factors. No. 1, he’s a San Francisco native. No. 2, Niners head coach Mike Nolan is on the hot seat and probably won’t be back next season.

The Bay Area reporters followed up by asking Holmgren if he has any stipulations in his contract about not coaching a division rival, and he said: “No.”

Holmgren announced in February that this will be his final season as the Seahawks’ head coach. He has hinted that he would like a front-office job, but on Wednesday he did not rule out the possibility of returning to the coaching profession.

“This season, it’s business as usual,” he said. “I’m coaching like I coach, and I’m acting like I act. I want to do well, and the team wants to do well. So, that’s my focus right now.”
