Seahawks cut Babin to make room for Colbert

RENTON — The Seattle Seahawks showed how much they like kicker Brandon Coutu on Wednesday.

Instead of releasing the rookie, the team cut veteran defensive end Jason Babin. Seattle needed to make a move in order to add wide receiver Keary Colbert to the roster.

Babin was the player received in a trade for Michael Boulware one year ago. While Babin did not see much action in 2007, he had a good training camp and moved ahead of Baraka Atkins on the depth chart heading into this season.

But the Seahawks decided to keep Atkins and Coutu ahead of Babin, even though both of them have been inactive for the first two games of the regular season.

The Seahawks are so enamored with Coutu that they don’t want to expose him to other teams, even though he has yet to participate in a game. Olindo Mare has done all the kicking for Seattle.

“We have a veteran kicker who is good, and we have a good, young kicker,” Holmgren said. “It gets a little dicey when there are roster moves to make, but the fact that we have another kicker is no reflection on Mare. He’s doing fine.”
