Everett prevails in ‘Battle of Broadway’

EVERETT — It began Friday morning as a flour and birdseed fueled assault on Everett High School by Cascade. It ended Friday night with sweet revenge for the Seagulls when Class 3A Everett dominated their 4A district counterparts in a 28-8 victory in the annual “Battle of Broadway” at Everett Memorial Stadium.
“It was huge,” Everett punt returner/split end Jake Frauenholtz said. “I have actually played with a lot of guys on (Cascade’s roster). A lot of them are actually really good friends of mine and they’ve been texting me and calling me all day … they actually vandalized our school so we had to come back and get some payback. We did and it was good.”
Everett quarterback Chase Herrick rushed for two touchdowns and threw for another to finish 10-for-15 passing for 115 yards. His 24-yard touchdown pass to Frauenholtz came as time expired in the first half as Frauenholtz out-jumped two Cascade defenders for the 14-0 halftime lead.
“That was a phenomenal play by Jake and he’s been making those all year long,” Everett coach Will Soren said. “That was huge going into halftime. We really built on that and that really continued to help us get going.”
As impressive as Frauenholtz was on that play, his performance on special teams was even more remarkable. He returned four punts for 68 yards, providing Everett with excellent field position and setting up three of the Seagulls’ four touchdowns.
After a strong defensive effort from Everett midway through the second quarter, Frauenholtz took a punt at the Cascade 48 and returned it to the Cascade 29 before running into his own blocker.
“That was big for us,” Soren said. “The first half I felt like that really swung the momentum on those punt returns. That was huge. A couple times it didn’t look like he had a lot and he got the sideline and cut back. He’s a great athlete and he showed it at the end of that first half as well as his punt returns.”
On the first play from scrimmage, Herrick took the ball up the right side, eluded several would-be tacklers and danced into the end zone virtually untouched for the 7-0 lead with 6:25 to play in the opening half.
Everett set up its second touchdown in much the same manner as the first. With 40 seconds to go in the first half, Frauenholtz again received a punt at Cascade’s 48-yard line and returned it to the 38. Herrick completed passes of 9 and 4 yards before finding a leaping Frauenholtz in the end zone as the half came to a close.
“(After we scored) our second touchdown, that got us going and got us pumped up,” Herrick said. “That was huge. That got us really pumped into coming back out and stomping on them some more.”
Herrick added a 1-yard touchdown run — set up by a 15-yard return by Frauenholtz — for Everett’s third touchdown and David Andre scored on a 25-yard run with 7:06 to play in the game for Everett’s final touchdown, giving the Seagulls a 28-0 lead.
Cascade scored with 1:15 to go in the contest. It was the Bruins’ first points in nearly eight quarters spanning the past two games. Jordan Duffy returned a fumble 40 yards and caught the conversion pass to give the game its final outcome.
After the game, Cascade coach Jake Huizinga was asked what the Bruins need to improve.
“How about everything?” he said. “We’re just not getting anything going, we’re not rolling. Our execution is really poor.”
Cascade fell to 2-2 overall. The one consolation was the fact this is no longer a league game with Cascade moving to the Wesco South this season.
But for Everett, their dominating display during the Battle of Broadway affirms their confidence as they open Wesco 3A league play next week against Lynnwood.
“We feel really good competing against these big 4A teams from big time conferences,” Jake Frauenholtz said. “Coming against 3A teams, it’s really going to help a lot.”
