In my music column this week, I reviewed new albums by Gnarls Barkley, the B-52s, Counting Crows and Panic at the Disco. Here’s some songs from each.
Click on the band name or album title to buy the disc, or the song name to hear it in a different window.
Gnarls Barkley — “The Odd Couple”
“A Little Better” — Cee-lo Green waxes poetic about the aches in his heart, finding some reasons for optimism
“Whatever” — Singing in a satirical teenage whine, Green gets a little more playful with the idea of angst on this track.
“Funplex” — Taco tiki huts and peace sign-shirts that incite riots get name-checked in this B-52s song.
“Hot Corner” — If this blend of retro rock and electronica doesn’t make you want to dance, you are deceased — Fred Schneider’s weird delivery aside.
Counting Crows — “Satuday Nights &Sunday Mornings”
“1492” — While Adam Duritz goes on an ill-advised number counting spree with his lyrics, this is still a pretty damn good rock song.
“Insignificant” — Here’s a live version of a song from the “Saturday Night” portion of Counting Crows’ new album. The spoken word intro from Adam Duritz adds a nice bit of perspective.
Panic at the Disco — “Pretty. Odd.”
“Nine in the Afternoon” — I don’t like Panic at the Disco’s new album, but I’d be lying if I said this wasn’t a catchy song. It reminds me of Paul McCartney, circa “Sgt. Peppers.”
