Snohomish escapes from bases-loaded jams to beat M-P

SNOHOMISH — Defense wins ballgames.
And Tuesday afternoon defense definitely won the ballgame for the Snohomish Panthers.
Snohomish (1-0 in league, 3-0 overall) escaped two bases-loaded jams in outlasting Marysville-Pilchuck 2-1 in a Wesco North game at Snohomish High School.
“It was a great defensive game by both teams,” Snohomish head coach Kim Hammons said.
The Panthers escaped the first of two bases-loaded jams in the second, giving up only one run after allowing the Tomahawks to load the bases with no outs.
Derek Jones (1-0 overall) struck out one, then got the Tomahawks to ground into a first-to-home forceout before finally getting a groundout to third, ending the inning.
In the fifth inning, the Tomahawks again loaded the bases, this time with one out. Tomahawks first baseman Riley Gilbertson singled to left. Snohomish left fielder Bryce Menhold fielded the ball and “threw a perfect strike home,” Snohomish coach Kim Hammons said, getting Tyler Holm at the plate for an outfield assist.
“That was the story of our game. We escaped two jams. We were pretty happy to get out of that,” Hammons said.
Snohomish scored the go-ahead run in the bottom of the second when Austin Reynolds scored on a wild pitch by Tomahawks pitcher Frankie Nelson. It ended up being the only mistake Nelson would make.
Nelson finished with a complete game, striking out six and walking three.
Jones pitched five innings, striking out three and Aaron West pitched two innings in relief for his first save of the season.
“West has done this for three years. He comes in and does a great job in those situations,” Hammons said of his senior reliever.
