Weekend hoops update

In case you spent all weekend watching playoff football, here’s a quick update on the UW basketball teams.

The men’s basketball team lost to USC Saturday to fall to 0-3 in Pac-10 play. The Huskies have been held to 52, 55 and 51 points in those three losses, and while WSU and UCLA are two of the toughest defenses the Huskies will face, it’s clear that Washington will need to find more offense to compete in the Pac-10. Teams seem to be figuring out how to slow down Ryan Appleby, so until someone else proves they can score consistently along with Jon Brockman, the Huskies could be in some trouble.

It was a little bit better of a weekend for the women’s team, which split at home against the L.A. schools. The Huskies looked pretty good last night beating USC by 15 points. The Huskies shot from outside less than they have most of this season, and instead worked the ball inside to Andrea Plouffe and Jess McCormack with good results. The bad news for the Huskies was that McCormack, who has suffered a number of injuries this season, left the game with a concussion in the second half. We still don’t have word on how long that injury may slow the freshman center.
