Teams trade field goals

Washington started the second half with the ball, and drove to the 22 before having to settle for a Ryan Perkins field goal. Louis Rankin had a 46-yard run on the drive, giving him 219 yards on 19 carries.

And, yes, Washington did start the first half with the ball as well. The Huskies won the coin toss and deferred to the Bears, who for some reason elected to kick off. We’ll have to see what Jeff Tedford has to say about that one.

Cal answered with a field goal of its own, but holding the Bears to three points has to be something of a moral victory for Washington, considering Cal had first and goal at the three. On second and goal at the one, Daniel Te’o-Nesheim leveled Justin Forsett in the backfield for a two-yard loss, putting Cal into a passing situation on third down. An imcomplete pass later, Cal had to settle for a field goal, making it 31-23.
