Offensive Update

It was the day to meet with the offensive players and coaches today. Quarterback Isaiah Stanback said he is feeling good and ready to play after having a hip pointer Saturday. Stanback was reportedly so hurt that he could barely stand at halftime and there was some talk that Carl Bonnell would play in the second half. But Stanback said he is ready to go and wouldn’t have an restrictions at practice this week. Of course, a bit later Tyrone Willingham said that Stanback “definitely” would be limited early in the practice week.
Stanback said he is trying to slide more at the end of runs to preserve his body, but it clearly isn’t something he likes doing. But obviously he has to. You love his competitiveness in taking on tacklers, but you can’t afford to lose him to injury.
Willingham said little else of note, and had no injury updates on Dashon Goldson, Jason Wells or E.J. Savannah.
Offensive coordinator Tim Lappano talked about how impressed he’s been with Bonnell’s work ethic, which was a problem last year. He said that the offense would not change if Bonnell were to play because of Bonnell’s ability to run. He also pointed out that things wouldn’t change under Jake Locker either. It was an interesting statement as one could read into it (and I certainly am) that Locker is the No. 3 quarterback, something that has been suspected for some time. Johnny DuRocher clearly doesn’t fit the system that the Huskies have in place now and playing him would require a completely different offense. If the UW had been struggling and this was a lost season, DuRocher would probably be the third quarterback but with this team winning, you’ve got to think that Locker would be the man should Stanback and Bonnell both good hurt.
Not much of note. Juan Garcia said after watching film of the Saturday game, he still believes that the official was in the wrong and started things too quickly. He also said he doesn’t know why his snaps were so poor out of the shotgun formation. It was a strange thing, as Garcia has been good on snaps all season. Maybe it was just a matter of it getting into his head a bit.
Spencer Hawes also stopped by for a few minutes to discuss his impending surgery. He said the particle to be removed has been there for a few years and recently flared up. After meeting with doctors, coaches and his parents, they decided now would be a good time for him to have the procedure so that he can be back in time for the season-opener. He doesn’t expect the surgery to be that big of a deal or to set him back much.
