Ugly, Ugly

An ugly first quarter is over in which neither team looks very good on offense. Both teams are killing themselves with penalties, particularly the UW offensive line. And it will be interesting to see if Washington sticks with Carl Bonnell if he keeps turning the ball over. Receivers coach Eric Yarber tore into Anthony Russo after the interception, so maybe there was a breakdown on the route. Also interesting that Washington used Johnie Kirton on a short yardage situation. Kirton got it, barely, and really, he hasn’t been very good from what we’ve seen in the past on short yardage. By the way, that was Kirton’s first collegiate carry. But after insisting that they weren’t going to use Kirton on the backfield, it’s notable that they did.

The UW defense looks really good, especially Dashon Goldson. And Greyson Gunheim, who lost his starting job last week, is doing some good things up front. Also, freshman Donald Butler is getting a lot of playing time and looks really solid at middle linebacker.
