Intiman Theatre stages strong ‘Heartbreak House’ by Shaw

Intiman Theatre continues its 34th season with George Bernard Shaw’s “Heartbreak House,” opening Wednesday at the Intiman Playhouse in Seattle, The play, directed by Jon Jory, runs through Aug. 26.

Drawing upon Chekhov, Ibsen and Shakespeare but uniquely Shavian in its energy and abundance of ideas, “Heartbreak House” is Shaw’s tragicomic evocation of England just before World War I.

A political activist on numerous social issues throughout his life, Shaw was a prodigious writer of successful plays, unsuccessful novels, insightful essays, extravagant letters and polemics on a variety of subjects.

His 150th birthday was commemorated on Wednesday with an Intiman Spotlight Supper.

“Aladdin Jr.”: Whidbey Playhouse ends its 40th season with the youth production of Disney’s “Aladdin Jr.,” opening Thursday.

With a cast of 30 local elementary through high school students, all of your favorite Disney characters are here, including Aladdin, Jasmine and the Genie. Most of all, the Academy award-winning score includes songs like “A Whole New World” and “A Friend Like Me.”

“Rumors”: Neil Simon’s comedy “Rumors” opens tonight in Mukilteo, a benefit for the Mukilteo Lighthouse Festival.

The Outcast Players are directed by Mukilteo residents Curt and Laura Shriner in staging “Rumors,” an adult comedy with twists and turns.

The show is presented at the Rose Hill Community Center.

This year’s Mukilteo Lighthouse Festival in scheduled for Sept. 8-10.
