Budding shutterbug: Recently earned second place in a national photography contest.
The competition, sponsored by Adobe Digital Kids Club, drew more than 800 entries. Her black-and-white photo is of her 9-year-old cousin laughing gleefully after Amanda said something funny and then fell out of a chair.
Impressed judges: Learned of the contest from Lynnwood’s College Place Middle School technology teachers Jim Corbett and Marilyn Dauer, who were impressed with her entry. Photos were evaluated for creativity and technical merit, with a panel of judges that included more than 20 art directors as well as photography students form the Art University in San Francisco. Amanda won $150 worth of Adobe software and a certificate.
See for yourself: Her award-winning photo can be seen at www.adobe.com/education/digkids/contest/main.html and can also be found in the December issue of “Technology and Learning” magazine.
Fun with photography: Uses her digital camera early and often. Has pictures of her friends on the walls of her room, along with rock bands and other images. Has 3,000 picture files. For fun, she likes to mess around with software to change appearances. “I will make my friends have pink hair and Mohawks and whatnot. They think it’s funny.”
Not a first: Has won other awards from the Edmonds Arts Festival.
Favorite bands: Long list includes Fallout Boy, Blink 182 and the Postal Service.
Music in the family: Her dad likes to play drums and sometimes Amanda joins him on electric guitar, an instrument she has far from mastered. “I just rock out with my dad, just as a joke. My dad can play really, really, really well.”
Career goal: Too early to tell, but is interested in graphic arts
Things she likes: Skiing, ice skating, boogie boarding, friends, shopping at malls, new puppy named Hoover and cat named Skittle.
