Everett schools receive grant for immigrant student programs

EVERETT — The Everett school district has received a $25,515 grant to help it expand programs for immigrant students.

The money will provide funding for a variety of services including tutors and extra help for students learning English, a program that explores college options for those who have finished high school, and others.

The money will be used to supplement existing programs for high and middle school students, said Everett Public Schools spokeswoman Mary Waggoner.

There are about 500 immigrant students attending Everett Public Schools, defined as students who were born outside the U.S. and have spent a three or fewer years in U.S. schools.

More than 70 languages are spoken among the district’s student body.

The federal grant money is administered by the state Office of the Superintended of Public Instruction.
