Why are judges so sympathetic?

With the DUI arrest of Judge Bobbe Bridge, my suspicion heightens that the punishment for DUI related offenses remains minimal because many in the legislative and judicial system may have an alcohol problem themselves. A homicide arrest and conviction may not garner their sympathy and leniency because it is beyond the realm of personal conduct of these public officials; however, a vehicular homicide as a result of driving drunk is not.
My mom and dad, Elmer and Joyce Kvinsland, died within eight minutes of each other after their car was struck by a drunk driver with four previous DUI arrests who was still legally driving the same road as my poor parents.
