Tulalip’s Komplex Kai is one of the speakers at the county’s Spark! event set for Oct. 20 at the PUD in Everett.

EVERETT — The Snohomish County Arts Commission wants to spark a conversation about social and cultural change.

To do so, the commission has invited an eclectic mix of 12 people to offer creative inspiration and provoke change-making ideas.

The county’s “Spark!” event is set for the evening of Oct. 20 in the PUD auditorium.

The speakers include artist Karen Guzak, the mayor of Snohomish; entertainer Tim Noah, who owns Thumbnail Theater in Snohomish; textile artist Chad Alice Hagen of Snohomish, talking about the muse within; and Snohomish artist Robert Fairfax, talking about the art of gardening.

Others are educator Sheila Dunn, dean of Everett Community College’s Advanced Manufacturing Training and Education Center; Shannon Danks, an Everett mosaic artist and leader of the All Aboard program for handicapped adults; Tulalip rap artist Komplex Kai; poet Brandon Pitts of Everett; Arlington Arts Council leader Sarah Arney, talking about art as the story of town; Lynnwood artist and Lynnwood Arts Commissioner Fred Wong, talking about artists who defer to nature; and Jeanette Turner, an Edmonds arts advocate.

Phil Klein, of Community Knowledge Works, will serve as master of ceremonies for the evening as he and the rest of the group share brief personal stories aimed at social change.

Wendy Poischbeg, the county’s cultural and economic development manager, is most excited to hear from people who have new ideas.

“The speakers all rose to the art commission’s challenge,” Poischbeg said. “I am eager to hear from those who haven’t had an arena such as Spark! in which to share their ideas. These aren’t going to be lectures, but instead will be short stories from these creative people.”
