50 years ago (1963)
Phil Williams, manager of Everett Safety Council, presented senior drivers of Associated Sand Gravel Co. awards for operating 12 months without any lost time due to accidents. Awarded were Bob Peden, Robert Lashua, Norm Riggin, Ray Compton and Dan Valiant.
The moody science film, “Voice of the Deep” would be shown tomorrow evening at Mission Covenant Church, Sams and MacDougal streets, Monroe. An offering would be taken to help raise funds for a sound projector for the church. The public was invited.
25 years ago (1988)
Arch MacDonald, the man credited with enticing computer giant Hewlett-Packard to Snohomish County, was offering the county the barn where he entertained politicians and business leaders for a community center. The deal included 20 acres of land around it for a park. County Council Chairwoman Shirley Bartholomew said the idea was being explored by Executive Willis Tucker.
A picture showed third-grader Joe Dragovan in the Maltby Elementary School spelling bee. Principal Alan Sall said the competition would send finalists to district competition at Monroe Middle School. Fifth-grader Jamie Schwitters was the winner.
